A classic EV conversion doesn’t need a million-dollar workshop, but a handful of tools are non-negotiable — especially the safety gear. High-voltage systems can kill, so the first items on this list aren’t optional.

Safety first: high-voltage gear
Before you touch a single orange cable, get properly insulated. Class 0 gloves are rated to 1,000V — well above what a conversion pack produces.
Class 0 Insulated High-Voltage Gloves (1000V)
Electrically rated rubber gloves — the single most important purchase before working on an EV pack.

You’ll measure pack voltage, check isolation and chase 12V gremlins constantly. Buy a CAT III / CAT IV rated meter that can read up to at least 600V DC.
CAT III 600V Digital Multimeter
Auto-ranging meter rated for high-voltage DC work. Don't use a cheap automotive meter on pack voltage.

High-voltage terminals and battery hold-downs have real torque specs. Under-torque and you get resistance and heat; over-torque and you crack lugs.
1/2-inch Drive Torque Wrench
Accurate, click-style torque wrench for battery terminals and drivetrain fasteners.

You likely already own much of this, but the full list includes: a quality crimper for high-current lugs, heat-shrink and a heat gun, a cordless impact, a hydraulic engine hoist for pulling the old motor, jack stands, and a label maker for the wiring.

Tools are only half of it. Always de-energize and verify zero volts before working, never work alone on a live pack, and keep one hand behind your back when probing high voltage. The gear above keeps you safe; the habits keep you alive.
