Converting a classic car to electric — an “EV swap” or “electric restomod” — means removing the internal combustion engine, fuel tank and exhaust, and replacing them with an electric motor, a battery pack, and the electronics that tie them together. Done well, you keep the soul of the car while gaining instant torque, near-silent running and almost no maintenance.

Is it worth converting a classic car to electric?

It depends on what you want from the car. In an era of rising fuel prices and expanding low-emission zones, an EV conversion can genuinely extend a classic’s usable life. Running costs drop to a few cents per mile, most electric drivetrains are effectively maintenance-free, and the car becomes far more reliable than it was with a 50-year-old engine.

The trade-offs are upfront cost and originality. A conversion is a meaningful investment, and purists will argue a numbers-matching classic should stay combustion. The sweet spot is a car you want to drive rather than preserve as an investment.

Can you convert any car to electric?

Yes. Any vehicle with an internal combustion engine can be converted by removing the engine and installing one or more electric motors, a battery pack, high-voltage cabling and instrumentation. Older, mechanically simple cars (think pre-1980 American and European classics) are often the easiest because there’s less to integrate.

The conversion process, step by step

1. Choose your donor car

Start with a solid, rust-free body. Mechanical condition of the engine matters far less since it’s coming out — but suspension, brakes and chassis integrity matter a lot, because EV powertrains are heavy and quick.

2. Decide your power source

You have three broad routes:

  • A purpose-built electric “crate engine” — a single, bolt-in housing with motor, batteries and electronics. The simplest path. Learn what an electric crate engine is.
  • A salvaged OEM motor (commonly a Tesla, Nissan Leaf or Chevy Bolt unit) — the most cost-effective, but you assemble the system yourself.
  • A component kit — motor, inverter and adapter plate sold to suit a specific platform.

3. Size the battery

More kWh means more range — and more cost and weight. Most street conversions land between 30 and 75 kWh, giving roughly 100–250 miles. Decide how you’ll actually use the car before paying for range you don’t need.

4. Mount the motor and batteries

The motor mates to the original transmission (via an adapter plate) or drives directly. Batteries are distributed for weight balance — often where the engine, fuel tank and trunk space were.

5. High-voltage wiring, charging and instrumentation

This is the part to take seriously. High-voltage systems are dangerous and, in most regions, conversions must be inspected and re-registered. Budget for a charger (onboard + connector), a DC-DC converter for the 12V system, and gauges or a display.

  • High-voltage cabling, contactors and a BMS
